Most of us grew up fortunate.  You know, like clothes-on-your-back, food-on-the-table fortunate. And most of us grew up very fortunate...playing sports, back-to-school clothes (kind of wish I was still in school for that!) and parents that would even move into a better school district so you could have a great education.  Enter:  Nikki and myself.  I grew up down the street from Nikki, as in, 3 houses down the street.  We were fortunate to live in a neighborhood where there were a few other girls who could play after school and borrow textbooks when you'd left yours at school and just a good, all around fun group of friends.  We rode bikes together and played cops and robbers, played on swingsets and occasionally enjoyed playing with Barbies and Legos.  Flash forward a certain number of years later and Nikki is getting married and asked me to photograph her wedding...yay!  It's so special for me to photograph a wedding like this...I always strive to get to know my clients as it helps me to tell their story in a much more close knit almost family-like way.  So it's exciting that I know Nikki's story and I get to help document another chapter of her life, with Vance  :)

A few weeks ago I met Nikki and Vance on a Sunday morning in downtown Charlotte for their engagement session.  After we spent some time in Charlotte, we headed up the road to Concord, where Vance's family has an awesome piece of property and my favorite:  cows!

Nikki and Vance, thank you for allowing me to capture your engagement session and I cannot wait for your wedding!!!

A few weeks ago Mike and I traveled home for some business mixed with a little fun.  My family goes to the beach every year and this year was no exception.  The girls and the kids hang out on the beach all day, the guys go play golf and we eat lots of bad for you really good food!  As I'm wrapping up this busy week I'm looking through photos I took at the beach and kinda wishing I was back there!

This summer we went to Ocean Isle Beach...

A lot of people who live on the west coast don't realize what the Intracoastal Waterway is...it's pretty awesome!  It's a narrow strip of water that creates little islands off the coast of North Carolina and in the summer is always filled with jet skiiers and boaters, etc.

Ah, so relaxing :)  Happy Thursday!

It all started over a bottle of wine (good stories always do, right?!).  It was a lovely crisp white wine as the day had been warm (for Santa Barbara).  Mike and I were hanging out, being lazy, watching movies and perusing the internet on our laptops on a slow Sunday.

That's when I saw the news article...Royal Couple Visiting Santa Barbara, or something to that affect.

"Eek, Ahh, OMGosh."  I swooned and carried on.  I insisted that we had to go.  Mike didn't seem too concerned that the Royal couple was visiting and that we could have a chance to see them in person.

I realized this would call for some great persuasion on my behalf.  Donning a ridiculous beach hat, I pranced around the house using a horrible, fake British accent, "Oh, Michael, we must go to the royal polo match.  It's a once in a lifetime opportunity.  I shall just die if I can't go.  All the stars will be there, it will be educational.  It's a historical event, one not to be missed.  Also, I can see Kate's clothes in person."

Unfortunately, the evening ended with "uh, let's talk about this later."  Whatever.

A few days later after my shameless, British begging expose, I arrived home late from a meeting, starving and just ready to go to bed.  Mike decided he wanted to run out for a late dinner..."Come with me," he asked.  "Oh, alright."  I agreed.  I met him at the front door, sans purse.

"Where's your purse?" Mike asked a little alarmed.
"It's taking a nap.  I'm not taking it."
"I think you should get your purse."
"Why?"
"I, uh, just think you should have it in case we need your driver's license or something."
"Oh, I already have that on me."
"I'll be right back..."  as Mike runs up the stairs.
"Take your purse!"  he says.

Sheesh, I'm thinking.  He must really like this new bag I bought.  Maybe I should get it in the white color as well.

I look into my bag and there's an invitation...in honor of my birthday to attend the Royal Polo Match!

You would've have thought the man was proposing again the way I carried on.  Excitement and near fainting ensued.

Anyway, onto the good part.  Such a cool event and it really was a once in a lifetime event to be able to see Kate and William (I like to think that we're on a first name basis).

The week leading up to the polo match, I was so excited...so excited in fact that I couldn't stop using my fake British accent.  I'm sure Mike loved it :)

We were permitted to bring cameras so I was loaded down with my camera and Mike brought his trusty point and shoot:

The day started out foggy, but fortunately the fog burned off and the sun came out.  This is the infamous "June Gloom" of Santa Barbara that has spread into July.

royalpolomatch_whitneyelizabethphotography_1.jpg

royalpolomatch_whitneyelizabethphotography_2.jpg
They're landing!  You could feel the excitement in the air from the crowd and there was a murmur going through the crowd, "They're here, they're here!"

royalpolomatch_whitneyelizabethphotography_3.jpg
The sun came out shortly after Kate and William landed, and so did the Champagne :)

Before the match, all the players rode around the field, were introduced and then the National Anthem played.  Prince William is #4.

This little girl brought her Kate doll along...I may have to go pick one of those up  ;)

royalpolomatch_whitneyelizabethphotography_7.jpg
Below is Melissa Ganzi, the only female player on the field.  She's an awesome and feisty player!

royalpolomatch_whitneyelizabethphotography_14.jpg
After the match, Kate presented the trophy to William's winning team and gifts to the other team.  Mike and I were standing behind the press and I'm pretty sure the guys in front of me were a little irritated that I was asking them to move for my shot :)

royalpolomatch_whitneyelizabethphotography_15.jpg

A blurry close up from Mike's point and shoot, isn't she so pretty?!?

I never thought I was the sentimental type until a friend pointed it out to me a few weeks ago.

Those who know me well know that I often purge things in my house or sell stuff online or load up a bunch of clothes and knickknacks and haul it off to Goodwill.  But there's this one shoebox that I keep around.  I place it on the top of my list of "stuff" to save if my house were burning down.  This shoebox is filled with what I usually consider junk...loose papers, random little knickknacks (like plastic sunglasses that light up and blink around the frames) and ribbons and bows and cards.  This is the kind of "stuff" that usually sends me looking for the shredder (OCD people unite!).  But this shoebox holds the most important memories to me, things that I want to keep around so that when I'm old and gray (well, the gray part is already happening, boo!) that I can remember all the sweet things Mike does for me.

It was around Sophomore year of college that I started keeping this box.  That was around the time that Mike and I started hanging out and he started inviting me to concerts, dinner, etc.  Mike would always give me a handmade invitation when he invited me to do something and it became the start of my shoebox.

So, all these years later this box is about to bust...I need to get another shoebox for all the invitations.  I didn't think I was sentimental but I guess it turns out I am!  :)

Happy Thursday everyone!  Time for this weeks installment of The Resource Room!

I hope everyone had a great Fourth of July (yeah, I'm just a few days late on that...).  I had a fantastic 4th filled with lots of kayaking and beach going and eating and lots of reading  :)

Here are just two of the great books I read over the weekend:

In The Garden of Beasts, by Erik Larson.  This book is about a family that moves to Berlin during Hitler's ascent for their father's ambassador position...historical and suspenseful and sad.  But good...you should read it!

The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake, by Aimee Bender.  Great read and very different from most novels I read.  The main character of the book can taste people's feelings/emotions through the food they make.

OK, so now onto the resource room part of the post!  The blog I'm sharing today is one that I recently found and they actually have a dedicated blog for Charlotte and Charleston, but I'm sharing the Charlotte blog today.  Go check out the Wedding Row!

I recently photographed Alexis, affectionately called Alex by her family and friends, in Santa Barbara in honor of her high school graduation!  I had so much fun photographing Alex, not only because she's a fun and cute and happy model but it was a cool reminder and rush of feelings of graduating from high school (freedom!), enjoying your last summer as a kid (freedom!) and preparing for college (again, freedom!)  :)

Alex decided to be photographed near the beautiful, historic mission of Santa Barbara and she introduced me to a few neat trails nearby.  Alex is currently in France on a mission trip, but when she's not saving the world, she's an A+ student, amazing artist (she regularly has paintings on display around town) and is preparing for the next exciting 4 years of her life at Westmont!

Congratulations Alex and have a blast in France!!

As my alarm (or, should I say, doggie-kisses-please-take-me-on-a-walk alarm) sounded off this morning, I glanced at my watch (yes, I'm one of those people who always wears a watch) and didn't quite believe my watch said 12.1.10.  I mean, how can it be December already?

Good thing I was prepared this year and we already bought our tree!  With our annual cross-country drive, we aren't able to enjoy our Christmas tree as long as I want, so 2 days before Thanksgiving we ventured to Nipomo (an hour-plus North of where we live) to the only farm that was selling trees before Thanksgiving.  So, now I'm all in a holiday mood :)

Mike loading our tree, with Bear in the drivers seat...

whitneyelizabeth_christmas2010_charlotteweddings.jpg
Along with the holiday mood, I become obsessed with "capturing every single moment."  To the point of it becoming a little ridiculous.  Case in point:

Mike: OK, I'm putting the star on the top of the tree
Me: Yay!  Awesome, let me grab my camera (as I reach towards a pile of 6 plus cameras)
Mike: Are you going to take the picture??!
Me: Ok, great, that looks great, ok, extend your arm more, yes, tilt your head, ok, perfect!  I got it!
Mike: awesome...
Me:  Oh wait, let me grab a shot with the G10
Mike: whatever
Me: Great, got it!  On hold on just a sec, lemme take one with the Holga
Mike: seriously?
Me: oh and just a few more with the polaroids, and maybe the 35mm and the contax?  Mike? Where are you going?!

See, it's the most wonderful time of year!  ;)

whitneyelizabeth_christmas2010_charlotteweddings_2.jpg
**All images taken with our handy-dandy Canon G10

While we were in Nipomo, we also picked up something else...more on that soon!!  :)

Talk about a crazy week, or, crazy couple of weeks!  Bear sprained his sweet-precious-cute-tiny-little paw the other night after he jumped off the bed...I guess he was just so excited to see me after a long day, but I feel so sorry for him.  Bear has been taking it easy and I've been lugging his 80lb behind around since he shouldn't put pressure on his leg...poor dog or poor Whitney's back?!  :)

Aww, sweet Bear :)  He likes to sun bathe in our guest bedroom where the morning light pours in...I've been dragging carrying him in the guest room in the morning...

whitneyelizabeth_bear.jpg

OK, enough about Bear, he always steals the spotlight!  Today for my Resource Room post I am sharing one of the industry's most amazing calligraphers...she does incredible work and I love stalking her blog :)  Check out Laura Hooper's blog!

One of my favorite things about bridal blogs is their location...generally, most wedding blogs will target a specific state or region and I think it's part of the fun and inspiration as a bride and photographer to check out different areas/regions to see what's popular in other parts of the country...

Today I am sharing Merci New York for my weekly installment of wedding decor and inspiration ideas via the Resource Room.  I enjoyed perusing their blog for "the busy city bride."  :)  Check it out HERE!

This past Wednesday night I headed to the local Santa Barbara Female Entrepreneurs meetup.  Some months I'm available to attend and some months I'm out of town, but when I'm in town I always make sure to go...we talk, we laugh, we eat and we drink.  So fun!  I actually blogged about SBFE when I first started my blog and you can visit that post HERE.  This month, our gathering was held at Kristin's new space for her business: The Grapeseed Company.  Being a wine fan, I love the backbone of her business:  Kristin creates eco-friendly, vinotherapy skin and personal care products from natural ingredients such as grapeseeds that have been discarded by local wine growers!  Talk about eco-friendly :)  Her store has the most amazing scents and I can't wait to attend her grand opening this Saturday!!

Chrissy and Diarmuid have such a great story it just has to be told.  Diarmuid is from Ireland and Chrissy, born and raised in Boston, has since traveled the country and the world studying.  On a study abroad trip to Ireland, she met Diarmuid at a pub.  The love that unfolded between them in the small amount of time that Chrissy was in Ireland was so great that only a few years later Diarmuid followed Chrissy to the states.  :)  I can't wait for their wedding!!

We started their engagement session on the beach right next to the Santa Monica Pier...

Then we walked along the park above the beach, where Chrissy and Diarmuid had one of their first dates in America...

The week after vacation is always hectic...lots of unpacking (and cleaning if you failed to complete that task before leaving...ahem, that would be me!), restocking groceries and catching up on work.  This week was even more unusual because due to fumigation, I had to become homeless move out for a few days.  In North Carolina, I had never heard of fumigation...but in California, it's quite common for places to be "tented" for a few days to treat termites.  When I say "tented," I'm talking circus tent-freak show covering upon your house...see for yourself...

Thanks to Google for the image  :)

Fortunately, Mike and I have some great friends in Ojai who are letting us stay with them and their chickens!

I got to feed the chickens this morning (insert fist pump!).  If you've never had farm fresh eggs, well, you are seriously missing out.  Best eggs I've ever had in my life!!  This is just one of fourteen chickens  :)

Happy Friday everyone!  My week of vacationing is ending here at Ocean Isle but I wanted to share this quick blog post before I get on the road.  Whitney Elizabeth Photography, Inc is now excited to offer wedding photography registries!

What exactly is a wedding photography registry, you many ask?

A wedding photography registry is a great chance for brides and grooms to create a registry asking for some of their favorite products, such as wedding albums or fine art canvases or prints or even engagement/bridal sessions!!  All products are available in the soon-to-be-wed couples private online shopping cart.  It's a great idea for a wedding gift for the couple who would enjoy additional photography services!

To provide your favorite wedding couple with this gift, please sign up with my online shopping cart, search for the brides last name and purchase the gifts you wish you give to the bride and groom!

Today, my husband and I are extending our family vacation a little bit by taking my nephews to Charleston to visit the South Carolina Aquarium and the Charleston Children's Museum of the low country.

I just love Charleston.  No, really, I looovee Charleston.  Something about this charming, Southern city and all its history and secrets are so inviting.  The architecture is stunning and unlike anything else in the South.  As much as I love historic parts of Wilmington, NC and Savannah, GA, neither compare to Charleston, in my opinion.  There are so many fabulous places to dine and great shops to visit on King Street and it's a beautiful place to get married  :)

That's why today for my Resource Room post, I wanted to share Weddings Unveiled because of their Southern flair and low country weddings.  Click HERE to visit the Weddings Unveiled blog (with tons of inspiration and real wedding features!).

Hi everyone!  I am in NC right now vacay-ing with my side of the family for the next week :)  It's been a little over two years since I've been able to join my family for our annual trek to the Carolina coastline and I'm so excited :)

I love our family vacations...they mainly consist of laying on the beach until burnt or tan, whichever, eating, consuming the occasional chilled drink, eating, laughing at what the kids say, sleeping, eating, playing cornhole, oh, and did I mention eating?  Rinse and repeat!  I just love my nephews and nieces, they make vacation that much better and keep us laughing and entertained and on our feet the entire time :)

Email is the best way to reach me!

Ahh, relaxation!

101 in 1001 lists are pretty popular...I know I've mentioned my obsession with goal and list making, so of course I have a 101 things to do in 1001 days list!  There is something that has been on my list for a very long time...in fact, it's been on there so long that I recently made a new 101 in 1001 list because, well, time slipped away, I suppose.  Sheesh.

I have always wanted to get my pilot's license.  I don't really have a great reason why, but I just want to and I am very fascinated by planes.  So about a month ago, Mike called me excitedly after he left work and asked me to meet him at the airport...

And we got to go flying!

So you're thinking, big deal, I just flew from Cinci to NYC last week.  OK, this is waayyy more fun than flying commercially.  I was having a hard time justifying to Mike that we should fly first class everywhere...but now I'm starting to have a really hard time convincing him that we should just buy our own plane ;)

This plane actually made a debut on my blog last year (oh, and there's also a super cute couple in the post as well :) )...click HERE to revisit the post!

I usually reserve Thursday's for my Resource Room posts, but today I have something more important to blog about...

As y'all know, Haiti is near and dear to my heart after my recent trip to Fonds Parisien and Port-au-Prince back in April (to learn more about my trip, click HERE.)  Yesterday, Laila, our amazing leader and founder of NRI (www.newrealityinternational.org) announced that the Haitian Christian Mission (where I stayed in Haiti) is partnering with NRI to find sponsors for 5 orphans.

The sponsorship is ONLY $420 for one year and covers education and shelter...if you are at all interested, please visit NRI's website and click on the "sponsorship" menu to learn more.  I cannot stress enough how much these children need food and shelter and education.

I think many people and parents out there wish they could pay for their college education or their child's education and in this current economic situation, it is becoming harder and more difficult for folks to do that, so if you can spare $420/year, you can help someone else get an education!!!!

Thanks for listening!  :)

NAPCP put together some amazing swag bags for the event...and I can say without a doubt that they were, hands down, the best swag bags ever (coming from the girl who has been to a gazillion workshops!)

Ever since I was a little girl, I have been fascinated with travel.  I remember sitting in fifth grade listening to a classmate recount her "boring" family vacation in Washington, DC and thinking, "I can't wait to go there..."  Fast forward fifteen years later and I'm thrilled with all the places I've been able to travel domestically and internationally and I am always planning my next trip...some trips have been to other industrialized countries, some are touristy trips and some have taken place in third world countries.

Just a few months ago, I was so fortunate to be able to visit Haiti to document the work of doctors, nurses and surgeons and when I landed in Fort Lauderdale from Port-au-Prince at the end of my trip back to the US and crossed the line through customs, the border agent took a quick glance at my previous destination and said earnestly, "Welcome home, Whitney."  I literally started bawling right there in front of 500 people waiting to get where they were going...coming home never felt so good.

But no matter where I am, at the end of a long day of whirlwind travel and sight-seeing, I always have the same feeling...I am so darn proud to be an American and I think it's part of the high that I get from international travel.  It reminds me of what an amazing home I have, the freedoms I have been granted that men and women I don't even know fight for and I am reminded how lucky I am to be able to voice my opinion, run a business and vote for whomever I choose.  We should all be so lucky.

I read an interesting and emotional article in last month's edition of the Real Simple magazine...in short, the article interviewed a few women who recounted their stories and obstacles of becoming an American citizen...here is one quote that resonated with me:

"I love being an American.  I love the fast pace of this culture, the ability to do a million things at once, and, most of all, the sense that there are infinite possibilities out there-all you have to do is grab hold of the one that you want."
                                            -Maria Yoplac

This past Wednesday, I made the beautiful, winding mountain drive into Ojai (where Reese Witherspoon lives! :) ) and joined a fantastic group of people for the ABC (Association of Bridal Consultants) Santa Barbara meet up.

Ariel Yve of Ariel Yve Design hosted our shindig at Papa Lennons (I had the best Chicken Caesar wrap, ever!  I am contemplating driving back today for lunch!) and Jodi Womack of Womack Company and No More Nylons spoke about networking and marketing.

It was a great meeting, I met lots of new amazing vendors in our area and I highly suggest others to come visit!

I must state for the record: I just love UPS guys.  If you follow along on my blog, you may recall a candid account of my interaction with the UPS guys...you know, the kind of conversation that sends them running towards the safety of their brown truck :)  I usually receive a steady, consistent stream of boxed client orders and ahem, sometimes, things that I have ordered online for myself, but this week I am coming home from daily walks around the block with Bear and finding anywhere between 4-10 boxes, a day.  My dear friend, Alice, the founder of the amazing professional child photographer association NAPCP has been shipping goodies to my door for next weeks retreat.

But I digress.  I love our UPS guy because last evening after he happily jaunted to our door and gingerly set down all the packages, Bear went ballistic...I mean, yeah, Bear usually barks at the mailman and the FedEx guy and the UPS guy but this barking was just crazy...I opened the door and found he had left a doggie treat for Bear on top of a large pile of boxes...seriously, it made my day.  I thought I was going to cry.  What is my deal?  The fact that the UPS guy cares about me so much?  And my dog?!  Well, maybe!  :)  I ran outside and caught him before he jumped into his truck and profusely thanked him...I'm pretty sure the entire neighborhood heard me...

Anyway, this week for the Resource Room, I wanted to share the beautiful blog of a recent acquaintance from an Association of Bridal Consultants event in Malibu a few months ago.  The Sterling Engagements blog has so many different weddings featured and an entire section of the blog devoted to not only inspiration, but also advice for brides!  Go check it out!  :)

Two years ago today Mike and I stood on the shore of Bald Head Island, wiggled our toes in the warm sand and said "I do."  If you were there, then you know I was totally sobbing my head off because I couldn't believe how lucky I was.  I don't believe in luck per se, I am more of a "make things happen" kind of girl...but whatever it was that brought us together: fate, luck, God or because we made it happen, I am so grateful.

Mike, thank you for making these past two years the best years of my life...so far :)  Thank you for being my best friend, my confidant, my biggest fan, and the most positive influence in my life...i.love.you!!

I recently had the fun opportunity to venture out to beautiful Ojai to photograph Addie and Willow...Addie and Willow are not my typical subjects...they are labradoodles!  (Really cute labradoodles, to be exact!).  They spend their days lounging on leather couches and herding around chickens in their yard...oh, to have a dog's life :)

Here's just a few images of their cute, fuzzy faces!

A few days ago I was searching for a few cute cupcake ideas (who, me!?) and I found The Polka Dot bride!  This is an Australian wedding blog with so many cute ideas, I swear, you will go throw a party (or wedding!) this afternoon :)

Several of their recent posts have gorgeous ideas for the color pink--so go check them out!

Happy Thursday!  I've been hanging out on the East Coast this week visiting family and enjoying Mother's Day with my mom-hope all the moms out there had a fabulous Mother's Day!

For this edition of The Resource Room I am sharing Junebug weddings...this is a lovely website and resource for brides...whether big wedding or small, destination or at home.  I love this wedding inspiration site in particular because of the "groombug" section of the website...which is for manly modern grooms who help plan their wedding :)

As usual here is a quick screenshot of Junebug's website:

It's been a few weeks since I've posted a Resource Room post-you know, where I share all kinds of cool, fun, inspirational ideas for new brides and make the rest of us want to throw parties every weekend ;)

If you've been checking my blog recently, you'll know that I've been slacking on the Resource Room posts because I've been blogging my Haiti trip and experiences...thank you again to everyone for checking back and asking what you can do to help!

Last week I had the pleasure of attending an Association of Bridal Consultants (Greater Los Angeles) event at the ever-so-gorgeous-clifftop Bel Air Bay Club.  I'm pretty sure it was one of the nicest networking events I've ever been to.  All the featured vendors really brought their game and shared amazing food, cake, wine, dessert, music and linens.  Yes, linens!  As most experienced wedding coordinators and designers know, linens can totally make or break your event.  As such with the ABCGLA event...the linens were amazing and I was able to meet BBj Linen's sales manager Kristy and visit their showroom a few day ago!

Here are a few images that I snapped at the Los Angeles showroom...brides and event coordinators, be sure to keep Kristy at BBj Linen in mind for your reception and/or party needs :)

I love this one--it's so Anthropologie :)

BBj recently started carrying an eco friendly option that is made from water bottles!  How cool is that!?  Eco friendly options are popping up everywhere for today's brides :)

I've always been a big fan of Wednesdays...of course, Fridays are pretty awesome as well, but Wednesday to me signifies the halfway point of the week.  If I made it through Monday and Tuesday, by gosh, I will make it through Thursday and Friday no matter how busy things get!  I'm particularly pleased with this Wednesday because the sun is out, it's looking as if it will be warm today and there are so many things I have to be thankful for!

I started keeping a gratitude journal late last year to remind myself of all the little things that happen everyday, no matter how small, that I am thankful for.  Some days are easier than others to find 3 things, but today, after having a great conversation with friends I quickly found my 3 gratitude items for the day...I could say I'm thankful for my friends, but I've already said that....no, today one thing I am thankful for is to have so many people around me to share ideas and thoughts with and just to be able to bounce dreams around.  You see, I'm quite proud of myself, as I child I did not like to share.  "Um, no you may not pick up my Barbie doll," and "Just what exactly do you think you are doing my touching my monopoly playing piece...it's my game!"  Fortunately, I kicked that bad habit to the curb and I love sharing my suggestions with others.

Speaking of sharing, my dear friends Alice and Kyu, the founders of NAPCP (National Association of Professional Child Photographers) have created a one-of-a-kind retreat for members and non-members in, wait for it, NAPA VALLEY!  The retreat will be held June 20-23 at the Meritage Resort and you guessed it, there will be lots of sharing and bonding and amazing speakers including Tamara Lackey and business expert Lisa MacKenzie!  To register for the retreat please click HERE!

And since y'all know how much I love wine...an ode to the grapevine...

Since we're I am still talking about sharing, Into the Darkroom recently put a cool widget on my blog (below near the comments section) where you can share my blog posts on Twitter, Digg or Technorati--have fun!

I've been under the weather the past week and I'm ready for my fever to turn into Spring Fever!  Don't be fooled--we all know it will get cold one more time before it finally starts to warm up  :)  By the end of summer, I'm usually tired of hearing weed whackers and lawn mowers all day long, but I'm happy to hear them now because it signals warmer weather and long, sunny summer days!  Oh yeah, AND baseball season!  But that's another post.

This past weekend I joined my fellow Junior Leaguers for a big event that we put on and I showed up as the photographer!  The new members put together an amazing community event called Kids in the Kitchen.  It's purpose was to raise community awareness about obesity and there were several physical games and activities going on and there was a mini cooking class for the kids with a professional chef-the thought behind targeting children is that if we can get kids involved, maybe they will encourage their parents to cook more healthy meals and engage in outdoor family activities.

Look at her go!  My clumsy self would probably pull a geriatric stunt and break a hip...

As I mentioned last week, I spent the earlier part of this week in Las Vegas for a huge photography convention and tradeshow.  If you've ever been to Vegas, then you know that it's a must to schedule "recovery" time for when you arrive back home.

Vegas is a city that will suck you in, whirl you around like you're spinning through the rinse cycle in a washing machine and then spit you back out on the street with no money and a headache :)    Most of my friends agree, while we could go without the smoke filled hotel and money slurping slot machines lurking around every corner, it's a great excuse to hang out with friends, connect with other photographers and see the latest and greatest in the industry.

I really wanted to sleep in this morning, but I just couldn't resist the beautiful weather today...ok, ok, I'm lying...I really had to get up for an eye doctor appointment first thing this morning, but whatever!  All's well in the eye department and they let me take an extra jolly rancher, thank you very much!

In other random, unrelated news, I realized this morning thanks to Twitter that this weekend is Daylight Savings!!  This weekend just got interesting!  I love summer and dread the days in October when we have to flip the clocks back and slowly watch the sun sink into the horizon earlier and earlier each day.  Winter is sort of like Vegas...sucks the life out of you!

Speaking of Twitter, I noticed the other day that I do not have a link on this blog for my twitter account so feel free to follow along at www.twitter.com/whitneyelizabet and you can find my Facebook page at www.facebook.com/whitneyelizabeth (make sure you login and befriend me to see it :) )

While I was in Vegas, I planned on snapping some pictures with my point and shoot and I planned on blogging a few fun images, but I didn't even use it the entire time I was there!  Too much fun, I suppose :)  So here are a few pictures that Sara captured...

Name that song!  I just realized so many of my blog titles are song lyrics...hmm.

Anyways, YAY for Friday!  Thought it would never get here :)  I'll be out of town for the next couple of days--I'm heading to Vegas for one of the biggest trade shows and conventions in the photography industry, WPPI.  It's a pretty big deal, especially this year, because it's the 30th anniversary.  WPPI holds their conference in Las Vegas every year so it's good excuse to get out of town and party, no, I mean, learn valuable business lessons and network!

If you need to get in touch, the best way will be email--I'll be back on Wednesday!  :)

Here are a few pictures from different Vegas trips...I'll be sure to blog a few images when I get back!

25? 25?  Geez, I can't believe I've blogged 25 resource room posts already--time flies.  Literally.

This week I decided to post a photographer's resource (or any business owners resource).  Actually, you could call this a "life" resource because in some way, shape or form, no matter what your career you can use this in your everyday life!

Y'all know how much I love the Sage Wedding Pros blog.  I remember finding their blog sometime early last year and just fell in love with it--accounting, organization...all the nitty, gritty back end business detail stuff--I just love it!  (I know, I know...I'm such a nerd).

Earlier this week they created  a post called "The Monthly Review."  This is probably one of my favorite posts so far because I am so super goal oriented yet sometimes feel overwhelmed by keeping up with everything that should be completed for my business.  And when I take a glance at all the personal things that I need to do, it almost knocks the wind out of me!

The Monthly Review post reminded me of a few personal resolutions/goals that I made at the beginning of this year and it prompted me to see how I'm measuring up so far.  I'm a huge bookworm and I have this burgeoning list of books that I've kept on my desk for the past two years of books that I want to read.  After two years of not getting to the list I realized that it's not that I don't want to read these books, it's that I get sidetracked...by yet another book!  So this year I composed my gigantic list (I'm almost embarrassed to share how many books are on this list) and my goal is to read all of them this year...and I can go out of order which will hopefully fulfill my typical satisfaction of not reading what's in front of me.  Sooo, I have 222 books on this list!  That comes out to just over 4 books a week--ridiculous right?  But not all the books are super long, some are fun books, some are serious, some are business related and many are biographies/auto biographies.  After reading the monthly review, I was reminded to check my success so far--almost on track!  I should have read about 38 books thus far and I'm reading number 35 currently...Yay!  If anyone wants to see what's on my list, let me know  :)

I liken business planning to wedding planning because if you've ever planned a wedding you know that you only have so many months to book several vendors and make hundreds of important decisions--each decision feels like it's the most important-therefore sometimes it's hard to prioritize (which is definitely my problem!).  So that's why I loved this post so much---be sure to read it and you can view the post HERE.

Growing up I wasn't all too concerned with the environment--like most of my friends we would recycle if the option presented itself, but we would never go out of our way to reduce, reuse and recycle.  As I got older, I started to care more, but it was that general feeling "oh well, I'm only one person...what can I really do to help?"

Then I met Mike.

In college, I was the queen of plastic water bottles...and I probably still would be if it weren't for him!  I'll never forget the first time he came over to my dorm room and he was so shocked...no, not because it was a mess (I am such a neat-freak!) but I asked Mike if he would like some water and he, of course, replied yes.  I then swing open the door to my mini fridge and there sat a pristine 35 pack of Deer Park water in individual bottles.  "Holy cow woman!"  Mike could not believe that I consumed that much water-in just a few days.

I drink TONS of water.  I stopped drinking soft drinks, etc in high school and I don't drink coffee and I've stopped drinking milk so it's pretty much water for me.  So it's no surprise that I was plowing through 70+ bottles of water per week.  Mike tried several different tactics with me..."there are chemicals in the plastic...," "do you know how much money you're spending when you could have water for free?" "did you realize that this bottle was shipped all the way from Fiji? FIJI?" "Did you know that there is a huge pile of trash and water bottles floating in the middle of the Pacific the size of Cuba and you're contributing to half of it?"

But I just wouldn't have any of it.  It was an addiction...I didn't care about the horrible facts...I just had to have my dasani/smart water/deer park water.

Then I married Mike.

Mike begged and pleaded for the first few months of marriage..."will you consider switching to a reusable bottle?"  Eh...I decided to try out a Nalgene bottle, but get this, I didn't like the plastic taste.  After trying a few different types I finally settled on Klean Kanteen and I actually like it.  I like the fact that it's stainless steel (another addiction of mine) and it doesn't make the water taste weird.

It's safe to say that I care a lot more about the environment now because of Mike and if kicking my water bottle addiction to the curb is helping to reduce the pile of trash in the ocean, then it must be true...one person can make a difference.

A few months ago, I created a green wedding collection (and also a green portrait collection) for my businesses and I am so excited to show you my new eco friendly wedding albums.  They are 100% hand made, no trees were cut down to create the albums and they're made locally for me!  The selling point for me is there are no chemicals sprayed on the images.

The pictures below seriously do not do this album justice...it's a gorgeous 5x18 album (super unique size!).  This is a sample engagement album...enjoy!

This website has been quite the project over the past year because I started out with a few different ideas and then scrapped those ideas...but eventually an idea was hatched that formed into what my website is today!  I am so happy to finally have my portfolio back online!!  My blog url will continue to stay www.whitneyelizabethblog.com.

Here is a fun screen shot of my websites homepage:

Also, today is my blog's one year birthday!!  I can't thank everyone enough for visiting, commenting and sharing the ride with me this past year!  To see my very first blog post one year ago click HERE.

It wouldn't be a birthday celebration without a cupcake and birthday candle!  :)

I hope everyone had a fabulous weekend and Valentine's Day!  Mike surprised me with a short trip to Monterey--one of my favorite places ever!  We had a delicious dinner at a sustainable seafood restaurant, Passion Fish, and then went wine tasting (who, me?!?) at a few organic wineries, including Heller Estates in Carmel Valley.

We grabbed this shot near Pebble Beach with our point and shoot:

Lately I've been sharing some blogs for my weekly resource room posts that aren't exactly wedding related---but then I stopped to think about it and they are.  When you're planning your wedding, it's all you can think about.  No matter how many things you are juggling at that point in time, wedding planning will more than likely come out on top because it's super important and the feeling is justified because it's the one day that starts the rest of your life.

I'm sharing the Positivity blog today--I don't even remember how I found this--probably through Twitter!  But I've enjoyed reading some of the affirmations on this blog...

I.do.not.like.to.shop.

I am, like, the antithesis of the typical American female.  I mean, what kind of woman doesn't like shopping?  Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the finer things in life, but I like my version of shopping, ie: I like shopping when I know just exactly what I'm looking for and I like shopping online.  It's one of those in-and-out kind of deals.

Besides being the weirdo that doesn't enjoy spending my weekends perusing the boutiques, I am also one of those annoying people that the retail stores see and then bar me from ever coming back...I buy something fabulous and then return it the next day out of guilt... "I don't need this,"  or "Ooh, this money could be used to buy more lululemon stock," or "Hmm, maybe I could put this is a low yield no risk bond."  See, I am just so on-the-edge-of-your-seat riveting with excitement.

So, when I started college in the hey-day beginnings of online shopping, you would think I just went crazy with buying clothes, bags, headbands and every other ridiculous accessory available to mankind.  But I didn't.  Something held me back.  Maybe it was because I had such great parents and older sisters who warned me about the guys selling tee shirts in exchange for credit cards near the campus bookstore.  Nevertheless, I managed to escape college without overloading myself with umpteen million clothes and shoes...I didn't need online shopping...

Until.

Mike and I moved to an area that didn't necessarily have all my favorite stores, and the ones they do have, they are small and don't carry everything shown in the catalogs (Hello, that is just plain mean!).  Enter online entertainment, er, I mean, shopping for needed items.  J Crew is completely necessary to make it through every day life, right?  Riiight.

In all actuality, I don't order too many things, but the UPS man does make a visit to our door frequently because of client orders and albums, etc and boy, am I excited to see that guy when he hops off his truck.  It's so exciting to view new prints and canvases and albums, so most of the time I'm already at door when I hear his brakes squeal.

I think my UPS man may be is scared of me.

Between my twenty questions and the 80 pound furry faux ferociousness of Bear that barks and howls at our UPS man, no wonder he has started to throw my boxes from the sidewalk.

"Hey Rick!  How are you?  Oooh, is that a Simply Canvas box?  I am just so excited...um, can you please be more gentle with my packages?!  Did I tell you that I did a photo shoot last week of the cutest two year old?  So, sounds like you need to get your brakes checked and your timing belt is screeching.  Hey, did I mention how cool your uniforms are?  Hey, well, have a great day!"  (as he is peeling out of the neighborhood)

Sooo, to make a long story short (kinda my infamous little thing), my mom ordered a Nook for me as one of my Christmas gifts.  I guess she got my not-so-subtle hint a few months ago (thanks, mom!). I read like a fiend so I have been so excited about this package and when my mom told me at Christmas that she bought it for me, but it wasnt shipping until early February, I just didn't know if i could make it.

Then, finally, last week I received my UPS tracking "your package has shipped," email.  I swear, I've checked the tracking on this thing about 20 times a day, as if checking it more often would magically make it appear on my doorstep.  The first thing I did Tuesday morning was wake up and no, I didn't kiss my husband good morning, no I didnt pat my sweet dog on the head and no, I didnt even put in my contacts...I blindly stumbled downstairs to grab my laptop and check my shipping status... "YEESSS!" I shrieked..."IT'S OUT FOR DELIVERY"...as if Mike and Bear even cared!

Later that day, Mike and I go for a leisurely run around the neighborhood at twilight...every car passing, every brake tapping had me turning to see if the UPS man had entered the neighborhood yet, nope...still no sign of Rick.

Once we reached home, I bounded upstairs to take a shower...then, all of a sudden, Bear starts flippin' out...barking til the cows come home style...I knew it, my nook had arrived!   I literally jumped out of the shower with shampoo still in my hair, hollering down the stairs to Mike "Is my nook here, well, is it?!"

He's quiet and then he finally answers, "No sweetie, he didn't drop it off."  "WHATTTT?"  I'm sure every single house in the entire city heard me.  Then I hear snorting...then I hear full on uncontrolled laughter...Mike says "Hehe, no it's here."

Say no more...I can rinse my hair later.

LOOK HOW PRETTY!

So, yeah, I'm a little excited!

Happy Hump Day!

The fact that it's February gives me the chills...no, not because it's cold outside, well, I think it's cold, but some people would throw stones at me for saying that, but February gives me the chills for several reasons...

*taxes are looming in the coming months, so pretty much from February 1 until my taxes are filed I'm sitting near my desk with Pepto Bismol.  Just kidding...a little.
*all the scrumptious, tempting, create-cavities-and-make-your-teeth-rot-out Valentine's Day candy everywhere you look...who can resist candy hearts?!?
*resolutions start waning due the lack of caring (did I really think I would clean every day? who was I kidding?!)
*the month is just so short that I just tell myself it's March...I can't believe February gets away with only having 28 days...I'm sure the other months are upset about this...
*the San Diego marathon is one month closer than it was last month when I signed up for marathon training (eek!)

About that last one...yes, I did voluntarily sign up for another marathon (maybe I should seek therapy?), but I'm still nervous about it...you see, when I run, I don't think about how long I have to run for.  I just do it.  And then later our trainers are like "wow, you ran 10 miles today" and that's when I'm like "OMGosh, that's so scary...glad it's over!"  :)

Last May I ran the LA Marathon and you can read about the entire emotional experience HERE. I am a competitive person by nature and this year I am fully prepared to kick last years race time to the curb!  Our running group this year is a great group of people and they make it so much easier to get up at the crack of dawn to go run.  Any and all words of encouragement are greatly accepted and appreciated :)

Since it's that time of year again, I have brought out my stinky, sweat stained hat.  I know, the hotness just oozes from me, does it not?  You can see a blurry cameo of Bear on the bed in the shot...he wasn't about to let me interrupt his afternoon nap with yet another photo shoot.

Wow, it's Monday...again.  How did that happen?!  Apparently my time machine invention didn't work this time...sigh.  The good news is that I'm finally back in the groove of blogging consistently so as I mentioned last Friday, be sure to check back often for some fun stuff later this week!

After being on vacation last month, with my NYC trip and cross country adventures, I finally had a chance this past week to sit down and cull through some of my favorites from this past year...flowers always stand out to me because who doesn't love flowers?!  Fresh flowers always brighten my mood with their vivid colors and sweet scents, and then of course the excuse to buy fun and unique vases!!

I always love to see what color combinations that my brides and their florists dream up and create...

The other day, I blogged about my new Fuji Instax that my mom bought me for Christmas and while I've been having so much fun with that little sucker (and buying film like it's 1988), I have to admit that I've been cheating on the Instax just a tad...just a little bit...it's not even cheating!  When I was home for Christmas, I asked my mom if she still had her old polaroid camera that we used in the '80's...she dug through her closet and found it...and it still had the receipt in the box from 1985!  My parents told me to "go ahead and take it, but good luck finding film!"  Well, guess what!?  I found film for it!  (Thank you, internet!).  Even though it comes out to around $4/picture, I took the risk of ordering the film, hoping that the camera would still work...and it does!!!

Poor Bear...as if he doesn't get harassed enough by me and my Canon gear, now I'm cornering him daily with my new holga, fuji instax and the polaroid!!

rainydaybear.jpg
But, sometimes, I think he enjoys all the attention  :)

rainydaybear2.jpg
And how fun is this?  I finally started Skyping (I know, I'm sooo behind the times...I'll wave to you from the 1980's with my polaroid, leg warmers and aquanet hairstyle!).  My first learning victim was Ross from Flosites...not only did he do such a great job on my portrait blog and website, but the poor guy had to put up with me learning Skype!

Then, I chatted with Heidi and my niece Molly...it was so fun to be able to "hang out" with them for a little bit :)

Soo, if you ever want to Skype, let me know!

The Thursday Resource Room is back for 2010 and I have a very interesting blog article today that is not only for brides but for photographers as well.  I stumbled across this blog the other day and the article has a fun map and statistics with details on how much brides are spending on weddings across the country.  I love charts and graphs and statistics so it was fun to mull over this article (can we say math geek?!).

Obviously, for all brides out there, this is helpful to see how much of a budget you may expect to have if you're living in a big city compared to other locations in the country.  For photographers and other wedding vendors, this is helpful for you to see if you're priced competitively for your region...click HERE for a link to the article!

Have a look!

Enough said!  I love, love, love canvases...most photographers sell them to families and portrait clients but I love to sell these to brides.  Mike and I have a oodles of framed prints in our home and in the past year have started adding more and more canvases because, well, they're just more fun!

Everyone starts their own business for different reasons.  Some people do it because they are passionate.  Some people do it for the money.  Some people do it to meet familial obligations and expectations that they will never be able to fulfill.

I did it for happiness.

My clients often tell me how much they love the emotion captured in my images.  I tell them it's a team effort because you can feel my excitement and happiness in their moment.  It's so exciting to not only witness love unfold in front of your eyes but to able to document it for someone to cherish the rest of their lives, but it's also incredible...it's actually quite an honor.

I realized last night that I hadn't accomplished anything this past week that made me happy.  That's not because I haven't "done" anything per se, but more or less, I have super high expectations of myself.  My dad used to tell me that I am the biggest critic of myself and sometimes I have to remember that I am mortal and not a superwoman possessed with "get it all done today" powers...although that would be pretty cool!

So I decided this morning to start doing something that I used to do every morning....and it makes me very happy  :)

It's not just that it's the beach...there's something almost magical about walking along these bluffs...you can hear the seals yelping and the waves rushing in and the surf pounding the sand and the seagulls chirping away and this soothing beach music is a reminder to enjoy each day without regrets and each day without anger and to just be happy.

This is a gorgeous wedding I've been meaning to blog for quite some time.  Their wedding took place at the Historic Beaver Dam House in Davidson, NC.  I had never been there, so it was fun to shoot at a new Charlotte location and it was absolutely stunning!  This wasn't just any ordinary wedding though....I've known Gina and Joe for a long time.  Joe and I go way back to good 'ole Harrisburg Elementary School and I met Gina when we were in middle school while running track.

Needless to say, I was thrilled when they asked me to shoot their wedding....it was an intimate ceremony and reception, followed by an amazing honeymoon in Hawaii, then followed by a huge party with all family and friends :)

I love how you captured the details of this wedding! I'm going to feature it on my blog! Beautiful work that needs to be shared as much as possible! I'll check back often!

As I have been patiently waiting for my sunburn to fade away, I realized that I never blogged a few super cool photos of Kari and Nahir from last year!  I did their shoot right before Mike and I graduated, got married, went to Europe and moved across the country.  Hmm, no wonder I never had a chance!  Fortunately, for me, Kari and Nahir are very nice people and have been patiently waiting for their turn!

We did their session at the VanLandingham gardens at UNC Charlotte (where I happily went to school!)....most people don't even know this beautiful area exists on campus!  Enjoy!!!

Normally, I would've blogged earlier today, but Mike and I went on a wonderful hike and ever since we've gotten home, he keeps sending me these horrendous photos of me from the beach...I look like a lion or something with crazy windblown hair....

Now, onto the good part:  I met Theresa in college: we were both sitting there trying to keep up with Economics and Business Forecasting, well, let's just say Theresa was keeping up and I was trying to stay awake...but anyway, we spent many long hours in the library and business study halls cramming for tests and quizzing each other on terms and theories.  We have tons in common and at the time, we were both happily engaged and anxiously awaiting graduation.  Theresa found out I was a photographer outside of school and I casually gave her my information.  The next time we met in class, I was met with a great surprise: Theresa asked when I could do their engagement photos...I told her I could blow class right then and there and we could do the shoot, but she wanted to stay and learn.  Mike and Theresa's session turned out so awesome and I think I just may have to include a slideshow in the next few days because I took TONS of photos!!  ENJOY their Reynolda Gardens engagement session :)
