When I went to Charlotte to visit family a few weeks ago, I also went to an awesome photographers meet-up.  We all know each other through the bschool, an online community for photographers.  It was so great getting to meet Heather, Aaron, Stephen, and Rolf to exchange ideas and network.

Fast forward to last week: Stephen, one of my new charlotte photographer friends, lets me know that he'll be in LA and SB for the week shooting a wedding and wants to get together (and we ate at this really good breakfast joint near the beach).  We had an enlightening talk about the industry and I got to meet his super nice mom  :)    Towards the end of our conversation, we both discovered that we admire what the other one is doing, yet we fail see how much we are accomplishing ourselves.  We talked about the tests and trials of owning your own business and I mentioned a famous quote that my Dad has told me my entire life: "Rome wasn't built in a day."  

I have been known to be a little (ok, ok, very) impatient with things in life.  Whether it was playing softball or studying for trig in high school, Dad would always tell me "Well, Whit, Rome wasn't built in a day," to remind me that everything worth having and working for in life takes time and if you can complete it in a day, then it's probably not that great in the first place.  I used to get so frustrated about softball, wanting to go from a regular left fielder to a superstar the next day and hearing that quote always reminded me to be thankful for how I've progressed, but to continue to work hard for what I want.  

I told Stephen this is how running a business is.  You can project how you want your business to be in 5, 10 or 15 years and yet, sometimes it can be so frustrating to know what to do next or how to get there with all the obstacles in the way.  Chanting that often said quote in my head helps me realize how far I've come and how exciting it is to be where I am today (and it remind me of my Dad :)  )

Stephen, i hope your wedding was absolutely fabulous in LA and I can't wait for you to blog about it!!
